His family confirmed his passing to the station, describing a career that left a lasting mark on both colleagues and the broader community he served.
Known for his calm delivery and professional style, McLean anchored midday programs and evening newscasts that became part of daily life for many households in the region. Viewers often described him as a familiar and reassuring presence, someone whose voice and reporting were closely tied to major local and national events over several decades.
His broadcasting career began at just 15 years old with a part-time radio job in Welland, Ontario. He later worked in Barrie and Kitchener before joining CHCH, where he would remain until his retirement from on-air duties in 2008.
Colleagues have described McLean as a mentor to many journalists who passed through CHCH, crediting him with helping shape the next generation of broadcasters. He was also known for his strong commitment to community service and charitable work, including leadership roles in fundraising campaigns that raised millions of dollars for McMaster Children’s Hospital and other causes.
